If you want to see your child excel with phonics, there are certain activities that you can do at home to help. These activities are fun for your child, and they help reinforce what he is learning in school. Chances are your child's teacher will be thrilled to know that you are playing an active role in helping your child learn phonics. In fact, many teachers will offer parents suggestions on what they can be doing at home to help the process.

Take a look at some of these fun phonics activities, and get started with your child today!

Flashcards: You can make your own set of flashcards that teach letter recognition, letter sounds, and letter combinations. Simply ask your child's teacher what the students are learning and go to Flashcard Machine to create your own set of flashcards at home to compliment what your child has been learning in the classroom.

Riddle Phonics: This fun activity will get your child learning letter sounds to spell words. Make a list of riddles that your child has to solve. Once your child solves a riddle, let him write in the correct word that answers it. This game can be tailored to your child's current level of reading and compliment what his teacher is doing in class. For example:

  • "What is brown with bristles and cleans your room?" (Broom)
  • "It has a tail and fur so soft. If it eats too much it might get fat. The answer is a ____." (Cat)

Phonics Posters: Phonics posters can be made easily and can be used in so many ways. Simply copy and paste clipart from the Internet into a MS Word or other word processing program. Have your child identify the picture and write in the correct word for the clipart picture.

  • Beginners – Let your child write in the beginning letter of the word. If you have a picture of a dog, make the poster read ___OG, and your child write in the "D."
  • Intermediate – Let your child write in the missing consonants. If you have a picture of a house, make the poster read ___OU___E, and your child write in the "H" and "S." You can switch and do missing vowels the next time.
  • Advanced – Let your child write in the entire word under the clipart image.

Labeling Activity: Get a pack of unlined index cards, colorful markers, and transparent tape. Go around with your child and label things in the house with the index cards. You can label everything from a lamp to a cabinet, to things in his room, and so on. Have your child write the words on the index cards and stick them to the appropriate things. In a week or two, take down the labels, and quiz your child by letting him read the words and pointing out the correct object in the house.

There are many things you can do to help your child with phonics at home. Just get creative.
